We provide scholarships to students with academic promise, financial need, and a commitment to their community!
The 1st and 98 Fund is committed to providing educational scholarships to deserving children. We focus on fostering academic excellence and helping young minds reach their full potential.
Founded by former NFL player, Jessie Armstead, the fund reflects his dedication to giving back. A Dallas native and University of Miami alum, Jessie wore jersey #1 in college and #98 in the NFL. His rise from humble beginnings to pro football success now fuels his mission to help others.
Jessie Armstead is a retired American football player whose remarkable career left a lasting legacy in the National Football League (NFL). From his early days as a standout at David W. Carter High School in Dallas, Texas—where he was named the 1988 SuperPrep National Player of the Year and earned USA Today and Parade All-American honors for three consecutive years—Armstead’s journey has been defined by talent, perseverance, and an unwavering drive to succeed.
He went on to play college football at the University of Miami, where he was a key contributor to two national championship teams despite suffering a devastating knee injury. His excellence on the field earned him a place in the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
Jessie was selected by the New York Giants in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. Over nine seasons with the Giants, he became one of the most respected and productive linebackers in franchise history. He earned five consecutive Pro Bowl selections, two All-Pro honors, and helped lead the team to Super Bowl XXXV.
He later played for the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) and briefly with the Carolina Panthers before retiring.
Since 2008, Armstead has served as Special Assistant to the General Manager for the New York Giants. In this role, he supports the front office with special projects, defensive evaluations, player development, and free agent recruiting.
Beyond football, Armstead is also a successful entrepreneur. In July 2021, he opened Grapevine Honda in Texas in partnership with Lithia Motors Inc., expanding his impact into the business world.
Armstead’s story is a powerful example of determination, leadership, resilience , and lifelong dedication to excellence—both on and off the field.
